The National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) is the United Kingdom’s National Technical Authority for physical and personnel protective security. Operating as part of MI5, the UK’s domestic intelligence service, NPSA plays a pivotal role in enhancing national resilience against a spectrum of security threats, including terrorism, espionage, and state-sponsored activities.
Established in March 2023, NPSA succeeded the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNI), expanding its remit to address the evolving and multifaceted nature of contemporary security challenges.
NPSA collaborates closely with other key agencies, such as the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO), to deliver comprehensive protective security guidance across various sectors. This includes providing tailored advice to businesses, academic institutions, and public sector organisations to safeguard critical assets, intellectual property, and sensitive information.
The authority’s advisory services encompass a wide range of protective security measures, including threat and risk management, physical security protocols, personnel security strategies, and guidance on emerging threats like hostile reconnaissance and insider risks. Through its research and development initiatives, NPSA ensures that its recommendations are informed by the latest intelligence and best practices, thereby supporting organisations in implementing effective security measures.
NPSA is committed to fostering a security-conscious culture across the UK, aiming to make the nation less vulnerable and more resilient to national security threats. By empowering organisations with the knowledge and tools to mitigate risks, NPSA contributes significantly to the protection of the UK’s infrastructure, economy, and societal well-being.
The NPSA were also the worthy winners of the 2025 Security Institute Odette Hallowes Award, a special award designed to recognise those whose work is often unseen but never unappreciated.
