The Security Institute is delighted to announce that, following careful consideration and deliberation, the Board of Directors has appointed Sarah Austerberry as the Chief Executive Officer of the Security Institute.

Sarah brings to the role a distinguished and extensive career in the security sector, spanning more than 25 years across government, critical national infrastructure, and private industry. She is a Chartered Security Professional (CSyP), a Fellow of the Security Institute (FSyI), and a Principal of the Register of Security Engineers and Specialists (RSES) — credentials that reflect her deep commitment to professionalism, technical excellence, and leadership within our field.

Over the past four months as Interim CEO, Sarah has led the Institute with clarity, professionalism, and vision — strengthening engagement with members and partners and ensuring continued delivery of high-quality professional development and support for the security community.

“After careful deliberation, the Board is confident that Sarah’s extensive experience, proven leadership, and passion for advancing professional standards make her the right person to lead the Institute forward,” said Julie Nel CSyP FSyI, Chair of the Board

Reflecting on her appointment, Sarah Austerberry said:

“It is a tremendous honour to be appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Security Institute. Over the past months, I have seen the dedication, expertise, and professionalism that define our members and our community. I look forward to continuing to build on this strong foundation with the Head Office team— supporting our members, advancing our shared mission, and promoting excellence and integrity across the security profession.”

As Sarah begins her tenure as CEO, the Institute will continue to focus on strengthening member engagement, expanding professional development opportunities, and advancing collaboration across the wider security sector.

In addition to Sarah’s appointment, we are pleased to announce several important changes to the Board that further strengthen the Institute’s leadership and strategic expertise.  Chris Stevens CSyP FSyI and Hayley Elvins CSyP FSyI have been appointed as Vice Chairs, bringing valuable leadership experience and deep knowledge of the sector.

The Board also welcomes James Bore CSyP FSyI as an Independent Director, contributing a wealth of cybersecurity knowledge and experience, and Oliver Lacey MSyI as an Independent Adviser, who will serve as the Institute’s Young Persons Adviser, ensuring that emerging professionals have a strong voice in our future direction. These appointments collectively enhance the Board’s depth of expertise and ensure robust strategic oversight as the Institute continues to grow and evolve.

We invite all members to join us in congratulating Sarah Austerberry, our new Vice Chairs, and our new Independent Board Members on their appointments, and to support them as they help guide the Security Institute into this exciting new chapter.
