Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Supporting Professional Growth, Standards, and Public Confidence

What is CPD?

The Security Institute is committed to promoting high standards of professionalism, competence, and ethical practice across the security sector.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) enables members to maintain and enhance their skills, knowledge, and professional judgement throughout their careers. Through structured learning, reflective practice, and meaningful professional activity, CPD supports individual development while strengthening confidence in the profession as a whole.

This page sets out the updated CPD framework, which takes effect from 1 January 2026, and explains how members can plan, record, and evidence their ongoing professional development.

CPD Framework Updates – From January 2026

What is changing?

From 1 January 2026, the Security Institute is introducing an updated Continuing Professional Development (CPD) framework designed to improve consistency, fairness, and professionalism across the security sector.

The revised framework introduces a clearer five-category CPD structure, removes enhanced point weighting, and places greater emphasis on learning outcomes, reflection, and professional development rather than attendance alone. These changes align SyI with best practice across UK professional membership bodies.

Awarding enhanced or double CPD points is no longer recognised as good professional practice across professional bodies.

From 2026:

  • One CPD point will typically equal one hour of learning
  • The same standard applies to all CPD providers, including The Security Institute

This ensures fairness, transparency, and credibility, and supports SyI’s wider commitment to professionalising the security sector.

The updated framework is built around five CPD categories:

  • Events & Formal Learning
  • Self-Directed Learning
  • Practice & Projects
  • Contribution to the Profession
  • Ethics, Leadership & Professional Values

Members will be expected to plan and record CPD activity across these categories to demonstrate balanced professional development.

The Early Career CPD Pathway has been introduced to support members at the start of their professional journey.

This pathway is designed for:

  • Student members
  • Affiliate or Associate members
  • Professionals with approximately 0–10 years’ experience in security or related roles

Early Career CPD is encouraged but not compulsory and focuses primarily on:

  • Self-directed learning
  • Work-based practice and projects

The aim is to build strong CPD habits early, develop confidence in reflection, and prepare members for progression to full professional grades.

*Early Career CPD Members will need to score between 18 and 24 CPD points per year, across a minimum of two categories.*

Standard CPD applies to members and professionals with greater responsibility, experience, or external CPD obligations.

It is intended for:

  • Fellows of the Security Institute
  • Chartered professionals, including those who are not SyI members but are required to submit CPD evidence to other professional bodies
  • Members working towards Fellowship
  • Members with more than 10 years’ professional experience, for whom Standard CPD is strongly recommended

Standard CPD reflects the expectations placed on senior and experienced professionals. It requires balanced CPD activity across all five categories, supported by reflection and appropriate evidence, and aligns with the Institute’s commitment to professionalism, leadership, and public confidence.

* You need to score a minimum 36 points of activity in at least 5 different types of CPD activity/category.  We only accept up to the maximum points in each category/activity.*

CPD will remain mandatory throughout 2026 for Chartered Security Professionals (CSyP) and Fellows of The Security Institute (FSyI).

The Institute is proposing that CPD becomes mandatory from 2027 for all professional grades.

This reflects:

  • Increasing expectations of professional accountability

  • Alignment with other professional bodies

  • The importance of maintaining competence, ethical standards, and public confidence

Any future changes will be clearly communicated and supported by appropriate guidance and tools.

To improve user experience:

• SyI will move to an IT-based CPD recording solution in February 2026

• This will allow easier logging, better reporting, and improved accessibility.

During the initial phase of the updated framework:

While the New online CPD recording system is being finalised, members will be able to familiarise themselves with the updated CPD framework using the 2026 CPD Scoring Matrix, available in the CPD Downloads section of the website.

Further guidance and updates will be provided ahead of the system launch.

Yes.

CPD delivered by SyI-recognised partners and other reputable providers will continue to be fully recognised, provided it:

  • Is relevant to professional development
  • Aligns with the CPD framework
  • Is supported by appropriate reflection and evidence

Members will be supported through:

  • The updated 2026 CPD Scoring Matrix
  • CPD planning and reflection templates
