Meet some of our runners...

Boguslawa (Baxi) Motylska MSyI – CPTED UK

I did a Krav Maga training with my girlfriends as a teenager. On the final day, the instructor told us not
to rely on our self-defence skills in the real life. We should run instead. He also said to break windows if
possible, as people will more likely react to breaking glass than a scream. It was before the BS EN 12150
toughened glass though… Today I am a Director of CPTED-UK Ltd- an international security training and
consultancy for the built environment with over 10 years of experience in designing out crime. Running
for me is part of my daily routine. I can only do it in the morning if I sneak out before my son gets up. A
morning run sets me up for the day. It helps me plan and prepare for whatever is in schedule. It allows me
time to reflect and clear my head and I find that running has increased my mental capacity to deal with
stress. It also allows me to eat pizza without feeling guilty.

Richard Stones OBE CSyP FSyI – CPTED UK

I have always enjoyed sports but not been a great fan of running; give me rugby and cricket any day. I
think I was permanently scarred doing the timed runs we had to do with all the kit on for police firearms
training. Back in 2011 I was the first serving cop worldwide to be appointed a CSyP and I now run a security
business, CPTED-UK with the founder of the running club Baxi. Using all her powers of persuasion she
subtly reminded me that when I was awarded an OBE for security in 2015, they forgot to add the S&E at
the end! I did not need much more of a prompt to give it a go! I must say, I enjoy it more now than I did
‘back in the day’. I am not sure my knees enjoy it, but that’s the benefit of the club, it’s for all abilities and we
all acknowledge the fact that ‘a run is better than no run’, irrespective of distance. Give it a go!

Dave Deacon MSyI – Security Manager DHL

I have never been the fittest dog on the track however, I have always understood that taking regular
exercise and eating and drinking in moderation helps me greatly in life, both privately and professionally.

Taking regular exercise helps me to Deflect and Deter those extra pounds, Delay the inevitable aging, and
Detect any potential issues to my health and wellbeing. (Did you see what I did there!?). It also helps me
think clearer and removes the ‘fog’ from decision making in life and professionally, where I ultimately look
to add value and make Security an enabler rather than a hinderance to my business and customers alike,
           demonstrating best practice.

Joining the running club has given me the added incentive and enthusiasm to get out and to share with
likeminded professionals. Be it running or walking, getting out and about is certainly contributing to my
positive wellbeing, especially in this recent demanding time.

Sean Bowen MSyI – Alliance Healthcare

I’m Sean and a later in life keen runner. I’m Head of LP and Security for Alliance Healthcare UK who are the
UK’s leading Pharmaceutical Wholesaler or, put more simply, the business that delivers medicines twice
a day to over 17,000 pharmacies, Doctors, hospitals and health centres. I’m also the lead on Business
Continuity and have spent the last 15 months ensuring continuity of supply of our vital medical products
whilst ensuring our own employees have a Covid Secure workplace as 90% plus of our team cannot work
           from home.

As many others will have experienced its been pretty full on but for a brief respite of a handful of weeks
last Summer. Its been vital for me to ensure I get some fresh air and headspace 2-3 times a week out
running, getting a break from back to back Teams calls. This was especially helpful in getting some proper
thinking time to try and anticipate what’s coming next as Covid developed and Government guidance
across the 4 home nations constantly evolved.
