Grades of Membership

There are three grades of membership available through validation:

Number of Points              Grade
11 - 20                                 Associate of the Security Institute
21 - 59                                 Member of the Security Institute
60 +                                    Fellow of the Security Institute

Points are allocated based on the following criteria:

  • Work Experience including the areas of responsibility of the roles held
  • Qualifications including academic Security-related and non security-related
  • Training including non-examination vocational and non-vocational courses
  • Other Contributions such as publicaitons written, participation in projects and/or organisations for the benefit of the larger community (outside your normal job role) etc.

Its important to remember that points can only be awarded based on what information is supplied ~ so the more proof that is provided (copies of certificates etc) , the more accuratly the resulting grade will match the individual's application.

Many members wish to retain their membership of the Security Institute once they have reached retirement, and we are pleased to be able to offer Retired Member status. Any Associate, Member or Fellow is eligible to apply for Retired Member status once they have left employment in the security profession, provided they have been a SyI member for 5 years. There is a one-off payment equal to 1.5 times the current membership fee, and this overs 5 years of Retired Membership, at which point it is reviewed by the Board. Further details of this process, and further information on how it works are in the attached document.

Challenges to Grading

The Security Institute operates an Appeal process for members believing they have been awarded an incorrect grade of membership. This is explained in detail in the Members Area of the website.
