Lobbying and Standards

Garry Evanson is the Director of Standards for the Security Institute. This is a new directorate, set up to focus our activities in lobbying and developing better standards and ways of working in the security sector.

This may involve special interest groups and/or committee work, research, and preparing recommendations and gathering opinion. If you have a voice and point to make, you can use the strength of the Institute to give it more volume. Contact us to see how you can become more involved.

We are working with the following organisations:

Security Industry Authority (SIA) - There are a number of key areas where the Regulator offers the Institute opportunities to provide feedback, enter debate, and help to shape the future of regulation in the UK. Whilst they also encourage direct responses from individuals, it is undoubtedly more effective if the Institute as a whole is able to provide collated feedback and arguement, thus representing over 1000 security professionals. See more information on the Institute's involvement with the SIA.

Skills for Security (SfS) - We work closely with the Sector Skills body to develop higher standards and encourage training and edicuation. In particular many Institute members join in Focus Groups on setting and developing National Occupational Standards.

The Security Alliance (TSA) - Formed in 2010, this group works to deliver a consolidated, suitable solution for the security community as a result of the demise of the Security Industry Authority. Originally the group comprises The Security Institute, the British Security Industry Association, ASIS Chapter 208, Skills for Security and the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals, but other organisations and individuals have also joined in.

CCTV Organisations Forum (COF) - This group formed in January 2012, and pulls together all organisations who wish to play a future in shaping the future of CCTV legislation and best practice. The first appointed Chairman is Brian Pender FSyI, with Alan Gardner FSyI covering the Secretarial role

National Occupational Standards

The Government is encouraging all sectors of the economy to develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) to cover all workforce activities. But, NOS are not mandatory, are completely free and are developed specifically by the industry for the industry

Security Research Initiative

The Security Institute is supporting the work of the Security Research Initiative, under the leadership of Professor Martin Gill.
